Do you have a great product or service but find it hard to get traffic to your website? Do you find yourself wondering how you could make yourself more visible on the internet? One of the biggest problems currently facing online merchants is how to get people to their sites to buy their products.
Affiliate programs are one way to address this common problem. Affiliate marketing is a mutually beneficial practice that helps merchants, customers, and “affiliates.” You may not have heard of affiliate programs before, but you’ve definitely seen them. You’ve heard of Amazon.com right?
What are Affiliate Programs?
An affiliate program is an excellent way of getting other websites to sell or promote your product or service for a commission. Affiliate programs are arrangements between an online merchant website and an affiliate website—the affiliate posts a link to the merchant site and is paid a commission for any traffic or sold items. Posting links with affiliates is an excellent way to sell products online, and it is an inexpensive and effective marketing strategy.
There are three core players in the affiliate game: the merchant, the affiliate, and the customer. Merchants favor affiliate marketing because in most cases it uses a “pay for performance” model, meaning that the merchant does not have to pay a marketing expense unless someone buys the product.
You have no doubt seen links to Amazon.com on tons of sites other than their own—this is because Amazon gets affiliates to post links to individual books for sale on Amazon, or for Amazon in general, by giving the affiliates a percentage of the profits if someone clicks on the link and then purchases books or other items. The affiliates help make the sale, but Amazon does everything else: they take the order, collect the money and ship the book to the customer. Amazon’s affiliate program is one of the most successful ones out there.
What are the different kinds of affiliate programs?
There are three basic types of affiliate program payment arrangements:
Pay-per-sale (also called cost-per-sale): In this arrangement, the merchant pays an affiliate when the link on the affiliate’s site leads to a customer purchasing something from the merchant’s site.
Pay-per-click (cost-per-click): In this arrangement, the merchant pays the affiliate based on the number of visitors who click on the link to the merchant’s site. The visitors don’t have to buy anything, and it doesn’t matter to the affiliate what a visitor does once he or she gets to the merchant’s site.
Pay-per-lead (cost-per-lead): In this arrangement, merchants pay their affiliates based on the number of visitors they refer who fills out some requested information at the merchant site, which the merchant site may use as a sales lead or sell to another company as a sales lead.
So why should I use an affiliate program?
You will become a lot more visible to a lot more people. Because your banners and links are placed on other sites you will greatly increase your online publicity.
You will have other people marketing your product and services, so it’s not all up to you.
Your sales will increase dramatically.
You will appear “bigger” than you are and your credibility will be increased.
It’s not expensive or complicated.
What you need to consider before you begin:
If you are interested in getting involved in affiliate programs, the first thing you have to do is decide whether you want to become an affiliate, want to acquire affiliates, or both. If you run a large merchant site and want to increase your sales, you might want to start your own affiliate program. If you run a small content site and would simply like to bring in a little money to cover production costs, joining a few programs as an affiliate would be a good choice. Your best option depends on what aspects of affiliate programs could best serve your site and how much you are willing to spend.
You need to decide what the objectives of your affiliate program are before you decide which option to choose. Some questions to consider include:
What kind of affiliate program is best for my business; that is, do you want to pay affiliates for actual sales, clicks or leads only?
Do you want your affiliates to market all your services and products or only some?
Do you want international affiliates or affiliates from your own country only?
Do you want to pay a percentage of sales or a flat rate?
How much are you willing to pay affiliates for sending you business? Industry standard is about 20% of a sale. (Any less than that isn’t as enticing for advertisers).
When deciding on which service to use to set-up your affiliate program, think of things from the affiliate’s point of view and what’s important to them. A key factor to running a successful affiliate program is having happy affiliates. Make things easy for them. Offer different banner sizes, text links, real-time stats and email notifications when sales are made.
Keep in mind that having more affiliates isn’t always better. The affiliate marketing experts say that 85% of referred sales will come from a few “super affiliates.” So don’t be too concerned if you only have a few affiliates. You don’t need a lot if you have good ones.
Now, how do you go about actually becoming an affiliate marketer?
Gone are the days when only the “big” sites could set up and run affiliate programs. Today it’s easy and there are a couple of ways of doing this. If you have your own merchant account but want an outside company to handle and track your affiliate program, you could use a service like either http://www.linkshare.com or http://www.cj.com but they charge large monthly fees and want you to commit to their program for a period of time.
Large sites develop their own custom software or use packages intended for Fortune 500-type operations. The affiliate software that tracks the sales partners make typically starts at several hundred and can go as high as the thousands. So what are some other options?
One great alternative for the smaller or beginner merchant who wants more control is to buy a software program that lets you start building an affiliate network right away without having to pay monthly charges. Once you buy the software, you upload it to your webserver and follow the provided installation instructions. After it’s installed, you’ll be able to login to create ad links for your affiliates, track results, and manage their accounts. There are many different software tools with a variety of features.
The affiliate software you choose should be inexpensive and have these features and benefits:
Start an affiliate program quickly and easily
Increase website traffic and sales
Have no fees beyond the initial software purchase
Unlimited number of affiliates
Track sales & download Excel-compatible reports
Monitor affiliate hits
Easily create, manage, and distribute affiliate ads
Direct customers to a targeted URL for a specific ad
Work with your purchase system or PayPal
With software like this, the process is simple. Affiliates sign up for an affiliate program and place the merchant’s ads (banner or text) on their sites. If someone clicks the ad on the affiliate website and buys something from the merchant’s site, the affiliate gets paid a commission. Starting your own affiliate program is definitely one of the best ways to increase web traffic and sales without any advance cash outlay; only results matter!

Starting a business is usually an expensive proposition. But with an online “affiliate program” you can at least eliminate most of the setup expenses.
Affiliate programs are online networks where merchants — such as Ebay, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kmart, and thousands of equally popular and many lesser known companies — sign up to allow website owners (publishers) to sell their goods and services on a commission basis. Signing up with a legitimate affiliate network is free and you never have to pay them a dime — they pay you, if you sell.
With an affiliate program you never have to stock inventory or fill orders; the merchant does all that. All you have to do is attract customers. This may be the most difficult part of any business, but at least you eliminate many of the other headaches associated with running a business.
The commissions you’ll receive in an affiliate program will probably be less than the markup you’d make in your own business, but that’s the price you pay for reduced headaches. (Tylenol is even better; but no one makes money taking Tylenol.)
You will need a website to sell for an affiliate program. And you will probably have to modify it often. So, unless you’re already doing very well with it, it’s probably not a good idea to hire an expensive consultant to set up and regularly modify your website. You can do it yourself with some user friendly software (like Frontpage) or a website hosting account that comes with a website builder.
While some affiliate networks will accept your signup instantly, others will scrutinize your website to see whether it meets whatever their requirements are: for example, how much traffic (visitors) it gets, the demographics of the traffic, what industry you cater to, and so on. Once you sign up, you (often, but not always) have to apply to each merchant individually.
A few affiliate programs that come to mind are cj.com (Commission Junction), performics.com and clickbank.com. You can find many more by googling “top affiliate programs.”
Some merchants, like Amazon.com (affiliate-program.amazon.com), run their own affiliate programs, so you don’t have to join a network.
Besides commissions and fixed amounts per sale, some merchants will pay for other “actions,” such as “leads” and “clicks.” A lead is when a visitor signs up for something (usually free) or request some info. A click is when a visitor simply clicks on the merchant’s banner or link that you’ve put up on your website. (You get these banners and links from your affiliate program account.)
The amount of compensation, which is specified up front, varies from merchant to merchant, even for the same products and services. It’s important to keep in mind that merchants that pay per click or per lead usually have anti-fraud software to catch website owners who enter fraudulent clicks or leads; so cheating is never a good idea.
Generating traffic and getting good “conversion” (visitors turning into sales) are vast topics in their own rights and beyond the scope of this article. An ideal situation, however, would be if you already own a domain name (perhaps from a company that’s no longer in business) that already gets traffic, and it converts into considerable sales. Otherwise, advertising campaigns, perhaps through PPC (pay Per Click) ads on google.com and/or yahoo.com, to generate traffic is one way to go.
Obviously, affiliate programs are not magic-bullet businesses where you set up a website, and a year later you’re flying around on private jets. Developing a business out of an affiliate program probably requires the same business savvy as that of a “brick and mortar” (real, physical) store; it simply involves a few less headaches.
One beauty of affiliate programs is that you can try several products, services, lines or approaches before hitting one that gives you a good ROI in less time and expense than one “brick and mortar” business; and you never get stuck with a lease or inventory. Website hosting is so cheap these days, a one-year commitment (which you seldom have to sign up for; monthly payments are usually available) can cost you less than taking a family of four to the movies. And a domain name averages only about ten dollars a year.
If you have your own goods to sell, you might want to join these same affiliate programs as an “advertiser” and perhaps get others to sell your products for you.

If you have a website that is dedicated to pre-selling products to a small niche you may find that you will soon have a case of diminishing returns. A single tier affiliate program is much harder and more costly than joining and promoting a residual income affiliate program. More and more affiliate marketers are putting in time and money to join and promote a residual income affiliate program rather then the traditional single tier affiliate program.
Why are they doing that?
Finding new leads is costly and with a single tier affiliate program you usually only get one commission per lead.
It is easier to earn commissions from on going sales from a single lead than to constantly be searching for new leads.
It doesn’t matter if you are doing seo, ppc, article marketing, or social media marketing. Constantly finding new leads to sell a single product to is pretty expensive and it is effectively the affiliate marketers biggest overhead. A residual income affiliate program retains the leads that have converted into customers and helps you earn repeated commissions from them rather than a one time commission.
Time is Money!
It is easier and much more cost effective to have repeat customers than it is to constantly have to look for a fresh crop of customers to do a one time sale with. Th acquisition cost per lead drops dramatically when your customers return to do more business with you. With a residual income affiliate program you can spend the same amount of time and effort in promotion and actually see your commission base grow rather than just watch the single commissions come in at the same rate or maybe even slow down.
So many visitors …
The constant need to get fresh leads is a drain and a down fall that joining a residual income affiliate program avoids. With a single tier affiliate program, once you have converted a lead to a customer and you have received your commission it is good bye for ever. Because of this, building your business is a slow and difficult proposition.
Now suppose you are generating 1000 visitors a day to a single tier affiliate program. Maybe 300 of those are new visitors where as 700 might be repeat visitors. What can you sell those repeat visitors? Maybe you have several different products in this website, but are they competing products? No one will buy a different diet program from your website if the first one didn’t work. In short, you can’t really sell them anything.
This is the importance of a residual income affiliate program it is the key to earning sales commissions from those 700 repeat visitors.
I suppose some two tier affiliate programs could perhaps be considered a residual income affiliate program, what i am referring to is an affiliate program that continues to pay you on a monthly basis.
There is a residual income affiliate program that values its affiliates enough mark any customer that an affiliate refers and all sales for the life of that customer are payed a commission to that affiliate. This type of residual income affiliate program is usually paid by membership sites and web hosting companies. And they can end up being very lucrative to promote.
In the end a good residual income affiliate program will help you build a business that can replace your current income and then some. Giving you the freedom you always dreamed of.

Prospecting leads is hard enough but using an affiliate program makes it easier. What an affiliate program is, is where you are allowing other marketers to sell your
product or program. You only have to pay when they make a sale. They have
to cover all the marketing expenses out of their own pocket, which is great
for you. The key is to make sure you reward your affiliates accordingly and make things as easy as possible for them.
First we need to get an affiliate program set-up. So go to your favorite search engine and look up affiliate program systems. Find the affiliate program you are most comfortable with and go with them. They will install everything you need and explain how to use their system. Your prospecting for leads will get easier because your affiliate program is in place.
Next we need to find affiliates. You can advertise wherever you please but I would suggest advertising for affiliates on clickbank.com. Remember the higher the commissions are that you pay, the better the affiliates you will get. If you only pay 10% of everything they sell you will not land the big affiliates. Try 50% and watch what happens. Here is a very good tip: Go to elance.com and hire people to get power affiliates for you. Only pay them 10 bucks per power affiliate they get and only once the affiliate has signed up with you.
Once you have your affiliate program in place all you have to worry about is getting new affiliates. Always reward your top affiliates with a cash bonus or a vacation to show them their work is appreciated. Contests are also a great way get more sales from your affiliates. Your affiliate program will prospect leads for you because you will have targeted interested people.

Each insurance agent operates differently and each might specialize in one type of insurance over another. One option agents have is to use an internet insurance lead program. Cold calling results in a fairly random selection of people, few of whom have any interest in buying insurance. Direct mailings aren’t much different; you might score some interested people, but you still have no guarantee they will buy from you. There are other methods that provide similar results. Placing newspaper ads or purchasing ad space on billboards will all provide mediocre results that probably won’t even cover the cost of advertising. The truth is, all of these methods seem prehistoric to those more savvy insurance agents that take advantage of what the Internet has to offer. Most people go to the internet first when they want to buy something or to learn about something. This is as true when it comes to buying insurance as with anything else. There are insurance lead program providers that specialize in attracting people interested in insurance and collecting their information. These companies pre-screen these individuals to make sure they are actually interested in learning about purchasing an insurance plan. They categorize the individuals and then they sell these internet insurance leads to insurance agents just like you. There many benefits to purchasing online insurance leads. For instance, you can buy as many as you like, and you can buy them whenever you need a boost in clientele. These internet insurance leads offer more advantages too. Some services will allow you to preview the leads before purchasing. This means you can get an idea of the type of person you might be dealing with. Does the individual have a good credit rating? Do they want full coverage? Are they looking for home insurance or auto insurance? All of this information is available to you before you purchase a lead. This means you can take the time to purchase only the leads that are conducive to your selling style and that will be interested in buying what you have to offer. If you haven’t taken advantage of an insurance lead program or internet insurance leads, then you should give it a try. Never before has it been so quick and easy to get into contact with real people with a real interest in buying the product you want to sell. This will save you time and money. Your closing rates will be significantly higher, and you’ll be earning more income in not time!

Online business, although lucrative for many corporations, can be frustrating to smaller companies that lack the financial and commercial connections bigger businesses have. While popular businesses are prospering both on the online and brick and mortar fronts, small to medium sized corporations are finding financial returns sparse when they deal with online clients. This phenomenon may be due to the fact that larger corporations can afford to market more aggressively online.
Marketing, indeed, is an important aspect of online business. The World Wide Web is growing increasingly crowded, what with the daunting aspect of similarly structured businesses entering the marketplace, all with the same goods and services, and all with their own marketing ploys that can be loud, if not downright annoying. The World Wide Web is fast becoming entangled in get-rich-quick schemes and loud vendors all desperate to sell their wares.
If you want your business to penetrate into this thick market, then you may need to do more than rely on word of mouth, or wait until a prospective customer chances upon your site. There is still a way to earn money online, and you can do so by getting your business into an affiliate program.
Although regarded as nothing but an outgrowth of multi-level marketing, and often looked upon with derision by large businesses, affiliate programs have actually been able to help small to medium sized businesses prosper online. Affiliate marketing is simply a method of gathering online businesses, all of them with like aims, products, and services, and allowing them to promote each other’s wares. Whenever a new visitor arrives at the main affiliate site, whenever advertisements are accessed through an affiliate website, or whenever purchases are made thanks to the effort of an affiliate, the affiliate will be rewarded with financial compensation.
The idea of gaining a commission from visitors has often made business people confuse affiliate marketing with multi-level marketing. There are only two tiers in affiliate marketing, however, consisting of the main site and its affiliates. In multi-level marketing, on the other hand, as many as five or six tiers exist, with businesses in the bottom tier allowing the tiers above them to earn money through marketing and selling efforts.
Affiliate marketing begins when you join an affiliate program. There are many affiliate programs online, with the most popular catering to the retail, adult, and gambling market. The mobile phone, travel, and finance sectors are also experiencing expansion, as more and more affiliate programs are being made to cater to businesses concerned with these sectors. If your business does not belong to any of these sectors, you should not lose hope; you may still be able to join an affiliate program and create advertisements that will attract prospective customers.
There are many ways for your business to earn money through an affiliate program. At its most basic, an affiliate program will require you to post advertisements of the main affiliate site on your website. These advertisements can be in the form of text, such as those that are found in Google’s AdSense program; images, such as those that are commonly found in banners; and streaming videos, such as those that are usually advertised on entertainment or adult websites.
If an advertisement appears a thousand times on your site, you may receive compensation under the Pay Per Impression scheme. If a visitor who chances upon your site clicks any of the advertisements posted by the affiliate program, you can also receive commission under the Pay Per Click scheme. If that same visitor fills out a form, registers, or subscribes to services on the main affiliate site, then you can also receive financial rewards under the Pay Per Lead scheme. Finally, if a visitor purchases a product or service from the main affiliate site, you also receive a percentage of the order as your commission under the Pay Per Sale scheme.
All these schemes may appear lucrative, but they also entail that you create advertisements that are attractive. If your advertisements can quickly catch the eye of your site’s visitors, then they may follow your links and allow you to earn money. If these visitors return to your site frequently, they can prompt the advertisements on your site to change constantly, allowing your impressions to increase.
If you are interested in making your business prosper online, then you may want to consider joining affiliate programs and carry out affiliate marketing. With the proper marketing know-how, you may be well on your way to better business in the crowded marketplace of the World Wide Web.
